About the event

In 2020, Synonym Lab invited Fang Chao to participate in the group exhibition Good News & Bad News at the 798 Art Center. It was only shortly before then that the curatorial team discovered he had been quietly developing his own creative practice. At that time, they agreed to collaborate on a solo exhibition when the moment felt right.

Over the past four years, Synonym Lab visited Fang Chao's studio several times. Located in the distant eastern suburbs of Beijing, far from the city’s noise and pace, the studio is where Fang Chao quietly ignites the fire within. He is not alone in this process. Fire is not just a tool but a core medium in his work. Under his control, flames become a way to shape imagery. Landscapes gradually unfold, suggesting a form of armchair travel. For Fang Chao, art becomes a way to pursue personal freedom.
